Material determines warmth, flexibility, weight, and price. Here's a side-by-side comparison to help you decide.
Standard synthetic rubber (styrene-butadiene rubber), not true neoprene. Adequate insulation but lower elasticity and resilience; tends to pack out and has higher water absorption. Ideal for price-sensitive markets and basic protection.
The industry standard chloroprene rubber (mostly petroleum-based). Offers a well-balanced combination of warmth, stretch, and durability. Suitable for the majority of product lines and budgets.
Japanese limestone-based neoprene. Extremely high closed-cell content (>93%), very low water absorption (~2%), lightweight, and excellent stretch. The preferred material for competition-grade suits.
Softer and more stretchy than #39 (elongation up to ~580–620%). Maximum comfort and freedom of movement for high-end suits where range of motion is critical. Slightly less durable than #39, often used strategically in high-flex areas.
Korean brand specializing in 100% CR neoprene sponge. Excellent stretch-to-cost ratio. A solid upgrade from standard CR without the premium pricing of Yamamoto.
Taiwanese manufacturer. Its CR sponges are primarily limestone-based (ECO series), significantly reducing petroleum dependence. Also offers USDA BioPreferred certified bio-based sponges (BIO-II series, 30%–90% bio-content from natural rubber, plant oils, oyster shells, etc.). Some grades are completely neoprene-free while maintaining strong performance.
Natural rubber (originally from guayule, now mainly FSC-certified Hevea tree latex), purified for performance. Comparable to high-end Yamamoto limestone neoprene, but with a significantly lower carbon footprint (approximately 80% less CO₂). A truly renewable alternative.
